Chapter 22: Punishing Huang San
He remained deeply uneasy, fearing that Ma might act impulsively and strike prematurely.
When he reached the alley opposite Huang San’s house, he found, as expected, that Ma was already waiting there as still as a statue, his entire being radiating a chilling, murderous aura.
Li Haibo stepped forward quickly, pulled Ma into a corner, and whispered, “Do you know how to use a Bergmann submachine gun?”
“I do. I used one back in the army!” Ma answered without hesitation.
Li Haibo promptly pulled a Bergmann from his pack and handed it to him.
Ma took the weapon with both hands, his excitement evident. With a slightly trembling voice, he said, “Brother Bo! Words cannot express my gratitude. Anything I owe you, I can only repay in the next life!” Having said this, he turned, ready to charge forward regardless of the consequences.
“Wait!” Li Haibo, quick of eye and hand, grabbed him. He then took another Bergmann and two pieces of black cloth from his pack. “Cover your face. I’m going with you; stay behind me!”
“Brother Bo, I…” Ma started to speak but hesitated.
“Don’t dawdle, let’s go!” Li Haibo cut him off. After masking his face with the black cloth, he strode toward Huang San’s house, simultaneously activating his “Supernatural Hearing” ability to scan the surroundings.
He discovered there were six people in the Huang residence: one on the second floor and five on the first.
The one on the second floor was most likely Huang San, while of the five thugs on the first floor, only one was sitting in the main hall; the other four were fast asleep in an adjacent room.
The two quickly reached the perimeter wall. Li Haibo, agile and nimble, stepped onto Ma’s shoulders and vaulted over with ease.
Once inside the courtyard, he quickly opened a spatial portal in front of him. Peering out cautiously, he saw that the thug in the main hall was focused entirely on smoking opium, lost in a daze.
He quietly opened the main door and whispered to Ma, “Huang San is yours; he’s sleeping in the second room upstairs. I’ll take care of the scum downstairs.”
Ma nodded firmly. Masked and armed, they charged inside with the resolve of men who had already accepted their fate.
“Who’s there?” The opium smoker, clutching his pipe, looked muzzily at the two shadows that had suddenly appeared before him.
“Rat-tat-tat…” Ma opened fire first. The angry bullets whistled out, the gunfire echoing like thunder through the silent night, shattering the tranquility of the late hour.
Twitching amidst the flickering muzzle flashes, the opium smoker fell backward. Even in death, he wore a faint smile, still intoxicated by the illusory pleasure of the drug, his hand tightly gripping the opium pipe.
“Charge!” Li Haibo shouted.
Ma raised his gun and sprinted upstairs with the agility of a panther.
Li Haibo, without a moment’s hesitation, kicked open a side door and sprayed the room with gunfire; the muzzle flashes instantly illuminated the dark chamber.
Li’s barrage caught the thugs inside completely off guard, and they collapsed one after another, shrieking in agony.
Meanwhile, Ma rushed to the second floor and kicked open the door to Huang San’s bedroom.
Huang San bolted up from his bed, clutching a refined axe.
When he saw the Bergmann in Ma’s hands, his eyes filled with terror and despair. “Who… who are you?” he asked, his voice trembling.
With bloodshot eyes, Ma tore off his mask and roared, “I am Ma Quanyi! I’ve come for your dog’s life to avenge my father. Remember to kowtow and beg for forgiveness on the road to the underworld!” With that, the Bergmann spat flames.
Huang San tried to dodge, but was struck by the dense hail of bullets and fell into a pool of blood.
After successfully dispatching Huang San, Ma was about to turn and leave when the corner of his eye caught the axe in Huang San’s hand.
The axe emitted a cold, chilling glint in the dim light.
Downstairs, Li Haibo was busy searching, his primary goal being to secure money and weapons.
Time ticked by. A full minute passed, but there was still no sign of Ma.
A sense of unease crept into Li Haibo’s heart. He knew that in such a perilous situation, every second of delay increased the danger.
He quickly focused his mind, activating his “Supernatural Hearing” to scan the floor above.
He soon detected the heartbeat of only one living person upstairs. At the same time, a dull, rhythmic thudding sound echoed—the sound seemed to be coming from the direction of the bed.
“What on earth is going on now?” Li Haibo’s heart was filled with worry. Without another thought, he gripped his gun and charged upstairs.
He kicked the door open. The sight before him made his stomach churn, and he nearly vomited despite his familiarity with death.
Ma looked like a demon who had lost all control, straddling Huang San’s corpse.
He was gripping the axe with both hands, hacking down again and again at Huang San’s bald head.
Huang San’s skull had already been smashed into a pulp, resembling a rotten watermelon. Blood and brains were splattered everywhere.
At that moment, a shrill whistle sounded in the distance. Li Haibo was anxious. He let out a thunderous roar: “Ma! He’s dead! Don’t waste time, we’re pulling out now!”
At the sound of Li Haibo’s shout, Ma’s body jerked violently, and the blood-stained axe fell to the floor with a clatter.
He looked at Li Haibo with empty eyes, his lips trembling as if he wanted to say something, but his throat was choked by his own chaotic thoughts.
Seeing this, Li Haibo rushed forward, grabbed Ma by the arm, and hauled him off the corpse.
“Move!” he snapped, dragging Ma toward the door.
Ma suddenly snapped back to reality. *I’ve had my revenge,* he thought, *but Brother Bo is still here. I must not let him fall into danger because of me.*
With that thought, Ma took a deep breath, grabbed his gun, and charged downstairs first.
Seeing that Ma had finally come to his senses, Li Haibo breathed a sigh of relief. Just as he was about to follow, his gaze caught a safe sitting quietly in the corner.
A thought struck him: *Good stuff. Into the infinite spatial storage it goes!*
The two rushed out of the Huang residence like a whirlwind.
By now, the shrill whistles were growing closer, sounding like a death knell. Amidst them, the confused shouting of policemen could be heard, as if an invisible net were rapidly closing in on them.
Li Haibo, frantic, dragged Ma and sprinted all the way to a sewer entrance. He bent down, used all his strength to heave the manhole cover open, and without a second thought, jumped in with Ma, leaving nothing but chaos and clamor behind them at the surface.
