Shen Guilan remained composed. She gently pulled Xiuwai behind her, stepped forward half a pace herself, lowered her eyes with a calm yet dignified voice: "Indeed, I am a common woman. May I ask what brings the master to our humble home?"
The man was none other than Zhang Delu, the landlord of Apricot Blossom Village. He snorted coldly, flicked his sleeve, and glanced around the dilapidated walls and broken roof, a mocking smile curling his lips. "I hear your daughter is named Xiuwai? Quite a lovely child. I, Zhang Delu, in consideration of the Zhang family’s many years as my tenant, have come to show mercy—taking her as my concubine, which is already a great favor to your fallen family."
Before he finished, Mrs. Zhang burst through the door with a clatter, crawling out with a sycophantic smile plastered on her face. She dusted herself off while nodding and bowing repeatedly. "Oh my heavens! Master Zhang, you have truly arrived! You are a benevolent saint, bestowing great kindness! Xiuwai has always been sensible since she was little. She will serve you tea, massage your shoulders and legs, making sure you are comfortable and well cared for!"
"Shut up!"
Matchmaker Wang suddenly appeared from a corner, having guided Zhang here initially. Seeing Mrs. Zhang interrupt, she sharply rebuked, "You foolish woman, what right have you to chatter in front of the master? Didn’t you agree just yesterday? Xiuwai can become a noble concubine! Now—"
Mrs. Zhang shrank her neck under the scolding but still forced a smile. "Yes, yes, Matchmaker Wang is right. You've worked hard. I’ll cook you an old hen stew later..."
Zhang Delu frowned, casting a cold glance at Matchmaker Wang. "Be quiet. Since when do I need your interruption in my affairs?"
Matchmaker Wang immediately fell silent, her face pale but unwilling to argue.
Shen Guilan remained calm, as if these people before her were nothing but withered leaves swirling in an autumn wind.
She slowly lifted her head, her eyes bright and clear like a cold pool. "Master Zhang, Xiuwai is only ten years old, still a minor. When you say to take her as a concubine, do you mean as a servant girl, or as a daughter?"

Zhang Delu was momentarily stunned, then burst into rage. "How dare you question me, the master?!"
But Shen Guilan did not step back; instead, she advanced with a clear, ringing voice: "If as a servant girl, there must be a contract, agreed wages, and a fixed term; if as a daughter, proper rites, entry into the family register, and recognized status. Yet you say only 'take as concubine,' without any documents or witnesses. Do you want her to be a black-market slave or a mere bed warmer?"
She paused, her gaze sharp as a blade. "Though poor, Xiuwai is my flesh and blood, not livestock, nor an object you can claim with a single word. If you are sincere, then formally marry her through official channels, sign the papers, observe the three letters and six rites—nothing less. Otherwise, I must refuse."
Zhang Delu’s face darkened like iron with rage, ready to explode, when ShenI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
