A sharp slap rang out, making Liu Shan see stars. After all, he was a factory boss—Liu Shan’s mind was jolted clear by the blow, and he restrained himself like a beast on the verge of breaking its chains, his breath barely audible.

He Kai, seeing Liu Shan still looked defiant, grew even angrier and glared at him. “What, you still have something to say?” He jabbed a finger hard into Liu Shan’s chest several times, biting off each word: “Tell me, with your status, what right do you have to stand here and speak to me?”

Liu Shan finally lost control and was about to start a fight. But Chai Jin, behind him, pulled him back—if they started something, the two of them would surely get the worst of it. After all, if you hit the boss, would the dozens of lackeys behind him just let you go? Would they not beat you half to death on the spot?

Dragged to the back, Chai Jin looked at He Kai with utter coldness. “Go ahead and search.”

Guo Minghao, who had already been itching to act, jumped out, putting on an aggressive front. He jabbed a finger nearly touching Chai Jin’s nose. “Just you wait, if I find anything, I’ll make sure you don’t walk out of here alive.”

Chai Jin remained unmoved, smiling as he answered, “All right, search away.” The smile was chilling, but only those who truly knew Chai Jin would understand what it meant.

Guo Minghao, convinced he had Chai Jin cornered, jabbed his finger in front of Chai Jin’s eyes, his face twisted. “Just wait!”

“What are you all standing around for? Start searching!” At that, over twenty people began rummaging through everything in the room.

Liu Shan’s fists remained clenched tight. But only a few minutes passed before one of the men, searching Chai Jin’s backpack, pulled out a brick-sized mobile phone.

“Found it!”

Everyone froze in place. He Kai felt a surge of delight—this bastard had been trying to worm his way into Ni Ni’s good graces, hadn’t he? And what was worse, Ni Ni seemed to trust him completely. Rumors were spreading through the factory that the boss’s daughter was about to be snatched up by a mere worker.

If I had evidence of his theft, wouldn’t that be enough to ruin him? First, throw him to Security for a good “interrogation,” then hand him to the police. I’ll even get the company lawyers to make sure he ends up in prison. A lowly worker, daring to dream above his station. Does he even deserve it?

He Kai was about to speak, but Guo Minghao moved faster. “Give it to me!” He lunged, intending to smash the mobile beyond repair—destroy the evidence, leaving no proof, and make it seem like Chai Jin had stolen it.

But would Chai Jin let him succeed? He snatched the phone first, holding it firm.

“What do you think you’re doing? Planning to resist?” someone shouted.

“Put it down!” another barked.

“Put it down! Or don’t blame us for being rough!” Over twenty hands pointed at Chai Jin’s face. Guo Minghao, the most agitated, rushed forward—but Chai Jin kicked him to the floor, then looked up at He Kai.

“Use your mobile to dial 980…” he said. “See who owns this number. And have someone check where I registered this line.”

The crowd of twenty or so people was stunned.

He Kai’s mind cleared. Guo Minghao, still on the ground, grew desperate and scrambled up for another try, but He Kai barked out, “Minghao!”

“But, brother, he stole it—”

“Don’t act rashly!” He Kai interrupted. “Give me the phone. I’ll check it right now. Don’t think you can fool me this way.”

Guo Minghao was nearly in tears and couldn’t help cursing, “He Kai, what’s wrong with you? Weren’t you the one who wanted to ruin this bastard? What’s the point of checking? Can’t you see the model? Isn’t it one of the phones our factory used to produce? Don’t you want to look good in front of your father by getting to the bottom of this? There’s definitely a gang behind this guy, stealing from us for years!”

“What’s the point of checking?” he raged.

The crowd stared in disbelief. Wasn’t this guy He Kai’s cousin and top lackey? How did he dare talk to He Kai like that?

He Kai’s face darkened—he felt as if he was meeting his cousin for the first time. “Say what you just said again?” he demanded.

Guo Minghao was so scared he nearly wet himself. “Brother, I’m sorry! I lost control. I was afraid you’d fall into a trap!”

“I’m confused? I need you to teach me how to do things?” He Kai snapped, pointing at Chai Jin’s face. “I want him to be convinced, understand?”

“Don’t you see the crowd at the door?” He Kai added.

Guo Minghao turned to look—the doorway was packed, people crowding three or four deep, some pointing and whispering. Guo Minghao was so angry he could explode. You want to ruin him, but you also want to do it righteously, brandishing the sword of justice. Do you think you’re some hero? I finally found this opportunity.

He cursed bitterly inside but could only flatter He Kai out loud. “Fine, brother, do as you wish.” Secretly, he began to plan his escape from the factory—if they really investigated, it would come back to him. This was no small sum; it was hundreds of thousands.

Soon, someone handed He Kai his phone. He Kai, still sure he had Chai Jin trapped, dialed the number Chai Jin had just recited. After all, how could a worker earning two hundred a month afford a mobile phone that cost over twenty thousand? Even if he could buy it, could he afford the usage fees? He was convinced Chai Jin had stolen it.

He dialed, and immediately the phone in Chai Jin’s hand rang—the sound like a series of slaps across He Kai’s face.

Before anyone could react, Chai Jin pulled several receipts from his bag. “Here are the purchase documents from Zhonghai Friendship Store. If you want further proof, I’ll go with you to the telecom office to check the registration.”

He Kai’s face turned grim. Guo Minghao glared at him furiously, cursing again, “If you’d just let me smash the phone, there’d be no evidence! Why put on such a show? Now look, you’ve shot yourself in the foot!”

Even Liu Shan stared at Chai Jin, completely lost. “What exactly does Brother Jin do? That strange air about him was one thing, but to have a mobile hidden in the dorm?”

It felt like meeting Chai Jin for the first time.

The dormitory outside was silent as death.

Chai Jin, seeing no one speak, looked at the twenty-odd men before him and smiled again. “Off you go, I won’t see you out.”

A staff member finally spoke, somewhat uncertainly, to He Kai, “Boss He, perhaps we should return to the office—this matter may need more investigation.”

He Kai’s face was ugly as he stared at Chai Jin. “Don’t get too cocky. Take a good look at what kind of person you really are.”
