Chapter 130: The Ambush
"I know I'm always the one to be sacrificed."
After saying this, Li Momo left without looking at Xiao Bai's hesitant expression.
The next day, Mo Fei and his two companions, still at the villa, saw Xiao Bai approaching with the same dark look on his face to inform them that they could leave and that he would send them to the border.
Mo Fei raised his hand. "I have a small question."
"It's not worth asking. Shut up."
"Will I ever see you guys again?" Mo Fei was completely unfazed, his face full of sincerity. "Actually, I quite like you all—free, democratic, and open. Where I come from, I can't even get my hands on potassium nitrate, but here I can see TNT! Do you know how happy that makes me?"
Xiao Bai did not know how happy he was, nor did he want to know. All he wanted now was to pack them up, send them back, and never see them again!
"Don't be in such a rush! I still want to interview your boss!" Mo Fei shouted as he was ushered into the vehicle. "What is his mental journey to becoming a boss? Does he want to write an autobiography? How many major life milestones has he had?! Leave me some contact information!"
"Get them out of here!" Xiao Bai personally shoved their bags into the car.
Long Er and Long Si were much more self-aware, standing to the side waiting for them to finish packing.
"You should know what to say and what not to say once you're out there, right?" Xiao Bai looked at them with a warning in his eyes.
"If you're talking about Bai Yingxiong," Long Si said with a mocking laugh, "the profiles for the entire Bai family are priced out in the open. It's just that Bai Yingxiong's costs a bit more."
It didn't matter if they talked or not; if anyone of a certain status wanted to target him, they would buy the information themselves. It would likely even include the exact location of his grandfather's burial plot.
"Xiao Bai!" Mo Fei suddenly poked his head out of the car window and called out emotionally, "Xiao Bai, can you grant me one wish?"
"Could you run behind the car and shout, 'How can I live without you?'"
"Just for a short stretch, please!"
Xiao Bai's mouth twitched, and he slammed his fist against the car door. "Drive!"
The driver obeyed, shifted gears, and slammed on the gas. The intense G-force threw Mo Fei back into the seat. A cry of pain could even be heard from outside the vehicle.
Xiao Bai felt a bit more satisfied, but as he turned, he saw the Long siblings still standing there, not yet having boarded their car.
Long Si popped a piece of gum into her mouth and waved at him expressionlessly. "Hi."
Xiao Bai: ...
Was there not a single normal person among this trio?
In the end, he had no choice but to find another car to send them off.
Inside the car, Mo Fei sighed repeatedly. "Xiao Bai is too heartless; he wouldn't even grant me such a small wish."
The driver kept his face rigid and didn't say a word. Was it really the other guy who was heartless? If only you were a little more normal!
"Say, driver, what do you do for a living?" Bored, Mo Fei steered the conversation toward the only other living soul in the car.
The driver slowly formed a question mark in his mind: ?
If only you would carefully read the sentence you just said.
"I heard from Xiao Bai that you're Boss Bai's driver," Mo Fei said, patting the seat beneath him. "So this car must be Boss Bai's, then."
"If I'm sitting in this car now, doesn't that make me effectively Boss Bai?"
Mo Fei suddenly slid to the side, leaned against the door, buckled his seatbelt, and gripped the handle above the door tightly. "Boss Bai has quite a few enemies, right? What if they mistake me for him and blow me up?"
The driver finally understood why Xiao Bai always wanted to beat him up. If he weren't currently driving, he would want to do the same.
Bai Yingxiong was one of the five major syndicate leaders in the Myanmar region; who would have the guts to attack his vehicle here?
The driver accelerated, his heart filled with speechless frustration.
But the next second, accompanied by a strange whistling sound, a shell exploded beneath the car, flipping it over completely.
The driver and Mo Fei felt a dizzying inversion of the world. If Mo Fei hadn't grabbed the handle and curled into a ball beforehand, he might have broken his neck or been knocked unconscious when he slammed against the roof.
Even so, Mo Fei was left dizzy and nauseous. Every part of his body ached, and he felt as though his internal organs were resonating and throbbing with pain.
After the vehicle was blown over, three or five men rushed out from the roadside. They were wearing green camouflage uniforms with red cloth strips tied around their arms.
One of them approached the car window, cursed loudly, and shouted something in Burmese to the others. Another, holding a machine gun, looked furious and opened fire on the vehicle.
The driver, who had still been breathing, was hit by several rounds, blood blossoming across his body as he instantly expired.
The man with the machine gun wanted to finish off Mo Fei in the backseat, but the vehicle carrying the Long siblings, having heard the explosion, had floored it and caught up.
Long Er's gun was already loaded; he leaned out the window and fired several shots at them. The bumpy dirt road affected his aim, and only one of the three men near the car was hit.
The other two, realizing the mission had failed, dragged their wounded comrade away under the covering fire of their accomplices on the side of the road.
The Long siblings did not pursue. Their priority now was to confirm if Mo Fei was still alive.
The vehicle stopped beside the overturned car. Long Si got out, crawled over to inspect the situation, and pulled Mo Fei out from the backseat.
"Cough, cough—" Mo Fei's face was stained with blood. Even moving felt like he was falling apart, yet he insisted on being humorous. "Is this—is this some kind of local 'farewell firecracker'?"
The driver of the other car also got out to check. Upon seeing the bullet holes in the body of the deceased driver, he was so angry he stomped his feet, continuously cursing in Burmese.
"Shut up for a second," Long Si said, pressing on several points on Mo Fei's body. "Does it hurt in these places?"
Mo Fei felt around and answered honestly, "I feel like everything hurts."
"Rocket launchers don't just count as 'damage' if they hit directly," Long Er said after looking around the roadside. "There are signs of an ambush here. There's movement two hundred meters away; the person with the rocket launcher must have fired from that position. Their aim was a bit off, so it didn't hit directly."
If it had hit directly, this car would have been ready for the scrap yard.
"Anti-tank weapon," Long Si said, looking down at Mo Fei. "How are you still alive?"
The main purpose of a rocket launcher is to strike tanks, armored vehicles, and infantry fighting vehicles at close range. When equipped with armor-piercing rounds, its lethality is immense. Even if they weren't using armor-piercing rounds, some anti-tank weapons are designed to shatter the driver's internal organs through shockwaves.
Using it on a civilian car was a waste of resources, but the passengers should have been dead instantly.
Yet Mo Fei was still able to talk back; he didn't look like he was about to die.
