Chapter 95 Shifting the Spotlight
As the police car drove out of the hospital, the atmosphere inside remained quiet. Officer Tang had been in the system for many years, witnessing both the clean and the corrupt. Though he sometimes felt angry, he was long past the age of being frustrated by such things.
Officers Xu and the young driver, still in their early days, couldn't help but feel down after hearing about the recent events. Observing this, Officer Tang began recounting the scene where Mo Fei confronted Zhao Liyi on the rooftop.
His storytelling skills were average, but being an eyewitness and with the excitement of the event itself, it wasn’t long before Officer Xu and the young officer were thoroughly absorbed.
When he reached the moment the bullet hit the ground, Officer Xu couldn’t help but ask, “How did he do it?”
No wonder Zhao Chengye, even after being arrested, kept insisting on seeing Mo Fei—who could believe that such a low probability would put the bullet in the last chamber?
“Zhao Chengye was at the wrong angle. I caught a glimpse,” Officer Tang lifted his hand to demonstrate, “The bullet didn’t fall from the revolver chamber—it dropped from Mo Fei’s palm.”
Officer Xu understood now and laughed, “He’s got some quick hands.”
Officer Tang chuckled as well, “That’s for sure. Those first five shots nearly scared me to death.”
“You’ve changed your opinion of him now, haven’t you?” Officer Xu looked at Tang, raising an eyebrow, “Mo Fei isn’t the type you said he was.”
Officer Tang smiled, “Being friends with him would be a pleasure.”
Time reveals character, and at least for now, he truly recognized Mo Fei.
The acknowledged Mo Fei was currently peeling an apple for Lu Chunqiu.
Though Lu Chunqiu wasn’t fond of apples, there must be some reason all those dramas show visitors peeling apples for patients. More fruit couldn’t hurt.
“By the way, sis, shouldn’t you hurry up and move?” Mo Fei shaped the apple into little rabbits and placed them in a bowl for Lu Chunqiu. “That apartment of yours really doesn’t feel safe at all.”
At this, Lu Chunqiu nodded, “It’s time to move.”
If they were still in the old neighborhood, Mo Fei would be downstairs, and he’d hear anything immediately.
Mo Fei immediately started searching his phone, “I’ll contact someone to help you move right now.”
“Ji Xingyu’s family runs a company, they must have a truck. Borrowing it would be perfect.”
He sent a message as he spoke.
Outside of eating, Lu Chunqiu had never seen him act so urgently.
It truly felt as if the boy had grown up.
Lu Chunqiu watched Mo Fei with the gaze of an elder sister to her little brother, growing more gratified the longer she looked.
“Where’s my phone?” Lu Chunqiu suddenly remembered, seeing Mo Fei messaging, “I hope it wasn’t thrown away?”
“No, it’s at the police station.”
Mo Fei recalled Lu Chunqiu’s door being kicked into a C-shape, the trending topic about global encounters with big shots, and the congratulatory messages flooding in. He thought it best not to let her see her phone until she was fully recovered.
Otherwise, she might faint again.
Lu Chunqiu nodded thoughtfully, “I should hurry and get it back.”
Mo Fei was at a pivotal point in his career; nothing could be overlooked.
Mo Fei smiled, a bit guilty, and gestured toward the door with his phone, “I’m going to make a call.”
“Go ahead.”
Lu Chunqiu watched him leave and felt something was slightly off.
Mo Fei walked to the end of the corridor and called Ji Xingyu, “Brother, I need your help!”
Ji Xingyu was bewildered but relieved, “Glad you’re okay. The internet is full of photos of you with police officers—I thought something serious had happened.”
“What do you need? Just say the word.”
“Help me find someone to move house,” Mo Fei said earnestly. “Lu Chunqiu is moving to the apartment above mine—the sooner, the better!”
“And see if you can find someone to replace the door!”
He had to compensate for the door he’d broken.
Ji Xingyu thought Mo Fei was calling for bail from the station, but instead heard this strange request.
Confused, he still agreed, “If you’re in a hurry, I’ll get someone this afternoon.”
“Thanks a ton! I’ll treat you to dinner!”
Mo Fei hung up and dialed another number.
“Director Wang, when will our movie be released? And when will filming start for the next one?”
Receiving Mo Fei’s call, Director Wang actually felt a bit honored.
Even more so, Mo Fei finally asked about something an actor should care about, instead of searching for odd resources.
Director Wang wanted to play it cool, so he cleared his throat, “The release depends on approval. As for the next film, we haven’t finished casting yet. Once we do, you’ll be notified to prepare.”
“I think now is a perfect opportunity,” Mo Fei said, seriously but bluffing, “Director Wang, my popularity is pretty high right now, isn’t it? If we promote the previous or upcoming movie at this moment, wouldn’t that save on marketing costs?”
Director Wang, seasoned and shrewd, instantly understood Mo Fei’s intention, “You want to shift the spotlight?”
“Your popularity is high, but I still don’t know what you were doing with the police—I can’t make a move without knowing.”
“It’s a good thing, absolutely good!” Mo Fei promised sincerely, “Assisting the police in their investigation. If anything is amiss, I’ll hand you my head.”
“What would I do with your head, use it as a paperweight?” Director Wang considered it. If it wasn’t negative news, it was indeed an opportunity.
Free publicity should never be wasted.
“I’ll think about what you said. Get ready to join the crew.”
With that, Director Wang hung up.
Mo Fei felt much more at ease.
With someone to divert the attention, turning temporary fame into interest in his work, even Lu Chunqiu couldn’t fault his plan.
He was clever after all!
The hospital they stayed in was a police hospital; the staff and patients had seen all sorts of drama. Though curious about Mo Fei, whose face had appeared on countless phones, they didn’t crowd around.
Lu Chunqiu’s hospitalization would last at most two days. Mo Fei needed to move her belongings before she was discharged.
Lu Chunqiu insisted he didn’t need to stay overnight. She knew Mo Fei would be busy.
As a capable adult, not suffering from broken limbs, there was no need for someone to hover nearby.
Ji Xingyu quickly found people to help move. When Mo Fei arrived at the apartment building wearing a mask and cap, he saw that the man driving the small truck was a familiar face.
“Isn’t this the same driver who helped you last time?” Mo Fei waved to him.
Ji Xingyu nodded, “Xiao Wang got his truck license, so I asked him to help.”
“Hey.” Xiao Wang climbed out of the truck, “If you need anything, just let me know. We’re all friends of the boss—no need for formalities.”
Mo Fei studied him for a moment and recognized him.
Before meeting Ji Xingjian, this guy had been sneaking around after him.
So many talents—no wonder he was valuable.
