Chapter 86: Get Out! An Unexpected Surprise!
In that instant, Zhao Sheng was utterly stunned. He was just on the verge of reaching the pinnacle of his life—how could things turn out like this? Yet, after saying just one sentence, Mr. Chu directly hung up the phone.
“What’s wrong?” Wang Yang noticed Zhao Sheng’s abnormal expression and frowned as he asked.
“Bad signal, the call dropped,” Zhao Sheng hurriedly explained, quickly redialing, only to find that this time, the line was completely unreachable.
Either the other party had turned off the phone, or he’d been blocked. In a flash, Zhao Sheng felt like crying. The world seemed full of malice toward him, and he couldn’t even fathom what had just happened.
“What exactly happened?” Wang Yang was no fool; sensing something was wrong, he asked with a hint of irritation.
Zhao Sheng dared not hide it any longer and said anxiously, “I can’t get through to Mr. Chu’s number anymore.”
“What?” Wang Yang was instantly dumbfounded. This guy had just vowed there would be no problem, assured him that the meeting was set, and now, at this critical moment, he said the call wouldn’t go through? Was this some kind of joke?
“Give me the number.” Wang Yang wasted no time. He was only pursuing this deal to forge connections with President Wu and the others—not to make a fool of himself.
Zhao Sheng, not daring to hesitate, immediately handed over Mr. Chu's number to his chairman.
Wang Yang dialed at once.
The call went through, and he let out a sigh of relief. But before he could speak, an angry voice barked on the other end, “Damn it, whoever you’ve been talking to isn’t me. I left my phone at a coffee shop and have already called the police.”
Wang Yang was just as bewildered as Zhao Sheng.
Then the call was cut off.
Wang Yang tried to call again, but this time, like before, the line was dead—likely he'd been blocked.
What was the meaning of this? The person they had arranged to meet wasn’t the real owner of the phone, just someone who found it? This had to be a joke!
Looking at President Wu and his companions, who were still calmly making tea, Wang Yang’s heart sank—no doubt their impression of him had plummeted. If this couldn’t be resolved, he really would become a laughingstock, and he could forget about ever joining the Min Business Association.
Luckily, the precious White Dragon Ambergris he’d smelled at the company was genuine. Eager to salvage the situation, he said, “There’s been a small complication with Mr. Chu. Didn’t you go to him today to get the ambergris for me to sample? Go fetch Mr. Chu here now.”
He’d said this for the benefit of the four from President Wu’s side—to show the ambergris was real. As long as Zhao Sheng brought the man over, even with some wasted time, nothing major would be lost.
But Zhao Sheng was rooted to the spot.
How would he know where Mr. Chu was, or where to find him? He hadn’t even fetched the ambergris himself.
“What are you waiting for?” Wang Yang, seeing Zhao Sheng standing dumbly, couldn’t help but lose his temper.
Just then, President Wu smiled and said warmly, “Mr. Wang, it seems there’s been some internal confusion at your company. Perhaps you should sort things out, and we can reschedule?”
With that, he went back to brewing tea. The other three exchanged knowing looks, half-smiling; they’d seen this sort of thing too often. Still, they were certain of one thing: the precious White Dragon Ambergris was genuine.
Wang Yang realized it too, but being called out by President Wu made him extremely embarrassed—and he knew Wu was displeased.
“Gentlemen, I sincerely apologize. I promise you’ll have a satisfactory answer,” Wang Yang said with a forced smile, shooting Zhao Sheng a venomous glare before marching him out.
Once they were outside the Min Club, Wang Yang finally exploded, glaring at Zhao Sheng. “You’d better give me a satisfactory explanation. Where did that precious ambergris come from?”
Zhao Sheng’s face was ashen. He hastily tried to shift the blame. “Chairman, this isn’t my fault. Huang Bin set me up. He supplied the ambergris and said his position wasn’t high enough to deal with the client, so he asked me, the manager, to handle it.”
“He must have been scheming against me, deliberately causing this mess so you’d have no choice but to turn to him. Then he could name his price—maybe he wants my manager’s seat.”
“To use such tactics to frame his superior—we can’t tolerate this!”
Wang Yang’s face darkened further. He wasn’t an idiot—he wouldn’t fall for such nonsense. Unable to contain his fury, he barked, “Zhao Sheng, get lost! You’re fired. Don’t bother coming in tomorrow.”
With that, he strode to his car, dialing a number. “We have an employee named Huang Bin. Send me his number.”
Zhao Sheng watched the car disappear into the distance, stunned and drained of all strength.
What on earth was this mess?
…
Outside Min City Art Academy.
Huang Bin parked his BMW 3 Series by the roadside and waited a long while before seeing Lin Nian emerge in a white spaghetti-strap dress.
The sight truly made him do a double-take, evoking memories from high school.
He recalled the racing heartbeats, the flushed cheeks of their first handholding—perhaps this was all the emotional value Lin Nian still held for him.
“Honey, do I look good today?” Lin Nian asked bashfully as she got into the passenger seat.
“You look great,” Huang Bin replied honestly. “But I waited forever. I deserve some compensation!”
He deliberately spread his legs, grinning.
“Drive slowly, then!” Lin Nian rolled her eyes, leaned over, and unbuckled his belt.
Though it was awkward in a BMW 3 Series, where there’s a will, there’s a way—especially since Huang Bin had promised her a 20,000-yuan necklace.
“Mmm!” Huang Bin let out a soft moan as he started the car.
He instinctively stroked Lin Nian’s head, feeling a pang of emotion—there really was no going back.
At that moment, his phone rang. It was an unfamiliar number.
He answered with some confusion, and a voice said, “Huang Bin, hello, this is Wang Yang. Can you come to the company? I have something to discuss with you.”
Huang Bin knew exactly who Wang Yang was and instantly guessed this was about the trap he and Chu Lin had set. He replied at once, “Chairman, is this about the White Dragon Ambergris deal? No need to thank me. Manager Zhao said you wanted to handle it personally, and I followed orders—for the good of the company.”
Wang Yang, hearing this, silently cursed Zhao Sheng all over again.
See? Here was an employee with a sense of the bigger picture, yet Zhao Sheng had tried to steal his deal, even using the chairman’s name to do it.
Feeling guilty, Wang Yang said, “Huang Bin, come to the company now. I’ll be waiting in my office.”
Outside the art academy, Huang Bin hung up and smiled at Lin Nian. “Babe, I have to run to the office—it’s a fifteen-minute drive. Do your best.”
…
Soon, Huang Bin pulled into the company parking lot.
After finding a spot, he couldn’t help but praise Lin Nian in the passenger seat, “Babe, your skills are impressive—right on time!”
Though complimentary, he wasn’t sure whether to feel pleased about her deft technique. Should he be glad? It was certainly enjoyable. But then again, every skill needs plenty of practice…
“You’re burning up,” Lin Nian frowned, wiping her mouth with a napkin. “I’ll wait in the car while you go up.”
Huang Bin was startled as he stepped out—could she really tell that?
There were still plenty of people in the company. In this business, working overtime for deals was common.
“Huang Bin, the chairman is waiting for you in his office,” a secretary-like figure greeted him as soon as he arrived.
Huang Bin smiled and nodded, and before long, he was ushered into the chairman’s office to see Wang Yang.
Wang Yang greeted him warmly, “Huang Bin, come, have a seat!”
“Chairman, is there a reason you called me in so suddenly?” Huang Bin knew it was about the White Dragon Ambergris, but he also knew to act as if he knew nothing.
Wang Yang was at a loss for words. At last, he handed over a document. “Huang Bin, Zhao Sheng has been dismissed. I hope what he did doesn’t make you think poorly of the company. I know you have a sense of the bigger picture, so I’d like to entrust you with a heavy responsibility.”
Huang Bin glanced at the document in surprise.
It was an appointment as team manager—Zhao Sheng’s old position, now his.
What an unexpected surprise.
It also made clear just how important that White Dragon Ambergris was to the chairman.
