Qin Anyi sat upright in his seat, unfazed as the police baton landed haphazardly across every part of his body—his chest, back, shoulders, head... every place within reach was thoroughly greeted by that stick. Yet, aside from a faint ache when the baton struck his head, the rest of the blows were entirely inconsequential to him, neither painful nor even itchy. In fact, his brain was probably the hardest part of his body; any sensation of pain was merely a physiological response.

The captain-like officer, driven by a surge of fury, kept up his relentless assault for nearly ten minutes without pause, only stopping when exhaustion overcame him and he could barely support himself, panting heavily.

After ten minutes of beating, Qin Anyi did appear a little disheveled, but it was his clothes that suffered most. His body, on the other hand, was utterly unscathed.

"This level of pain does very little to enhance your resistance to blows. You can disregard it. If you truly want to improve your defensive capabilities, it would be better for you to use other methods. I’ll design a more effective plan for you," the Kirin observed silently as Qin Anyi was beaten, finally speaking up in his mind.

Qin Anyi blinked, then asked inwardly, "So you’re saying... I just got beaten up for nothing?"

"That’s correct."

"Damn! Why didn’t you warn me earlier?"

"I needed actual data to analyze and reach a definitive conclusion. Before you were beaten, I couldn’t be sure whether this level of injury would benefit you."

Qin Anyi couldn’t help but curse inwardly. He wasn’t a masochist; who would willingly sit still and let others beat them if there was no benefit whatsoever—even if the pain was negligible?

"Damn... You really are tough. Not a peep out of you after all this, and you’re still in one piece," the captain-like officer growled between breaths. In the past, his stamina wouldn’t have failed him so quickly, but ever since he’d wormed his way into the police force, his lifestyle had changed for the worse.

As Zhao Bighead, Wang Shi’s trusted subordinate, carried out these frame-ups, he naturally made use of Wang Shi’s resources and connections. Since he was helping Guo Qingyuan, there was no need to consult Wang Shi; Zhao Bighead had the authority to act on his own.

"Your actions already constitute an abuse of power. While it may not be torture for a confession, arbitrarily beating a civilian cooperating with the investigation is a serious dereliction of duty. I reserve the right to press charges against you," Qin Anyi said, his tone unchanging, calm to the point that it grated on the captain’s nerves.

"You must be out of your mind! You’re going to press charges against me? You? Do you even know who you are? Never mind beating you—if I decided to break your arm right here, what could you possibly do about it?" the captain scoffed arrogantly. "Abuse of power? How naive. I told you, you’ve crossed the wrong people. Now that you’re in here, don’t expect to get out. Even if you’re as clean as a whistle, we’ll find a way to make you dirty!"

Qin Anyi raised an eyebrow and asked calmly, "Does the seriousness of the law mean nothing to you at all?"

"Law? You want to talk to me about the law?" The captain blinked, then burst into raucous laughter as if he’d just heard the best joke in the world. "Did you all hear that? This idiot wants to talk to me about the law!"

The other officers chuckled in response, though their laughter was tinged with awkwardness.

"Is it really so funny?" Qin Anyi remained unaffected, his demeanor as serene as when he first sat down. This composure only made the captain angrier; he preferred when people begged for mercy and cowered before him, not when they acted as though he were beneath their notice.

The smaller the man, the more he cares about his so-called pride. Lacking the inner strength to be low-key, he could only satisfy himself by acting high and mighty.

"Isn’t it funny? Hmph. Boy, you’re remarkably calm in the face of disaster. I almost want to applaud you. But are you stupid? Let me tell you, in here, I am the law!"

Qin Anyi exhaled slowly; the absurdity of the scene almost made him laugh. Lines this idiotic belonged in cheap novels or soap operas, not real life... Reality, indeed, is often stranger than fiction.
