"Anyi, how are you? Are you alright? Damn it, those sons of bitches! I knew they'd do something like this—that's why I rushed over the moment I heard, but I still ended up a bit late..." Weidong ran up to Qin Anyi, his face full of regret, casting anxious glances up and down as he cursed under his breath. He had thought he’d been fast enough, yet in the mere half-hour window, Qin Anyi had already been beaten. The guilt gnawed at Weidong; after all, Anyi had gotten into trouble because of him, and the two of them were close friends. Seeing those bruises and welts all over Qin Anyi, Weidong felt as though every one of them was a slap to his own face.

Qin Anyi just smiled indifferently, rolling his shoulders and stretching. Then, right before their eyes, all the bruises and swelling on his upper body faded away in an instant, vanishing without a trace. Weidong’s eyes went wide; his mouth opened and closed wordlessly several times as he pointed at Qin Anyi, utterly at a loss for words.

"Don’t be surprised," Qin Anyi said calmly, slipping his shirt back on. "I just wanted to show you—yes, they got physical, but to me, this kind of injury is meaningless." Then he asked, "Why did you come so soon? If you don’t plan this carefully, you’ll tip off Guo Qingyuan. You might not get the result you want if he catches on."

Despite the bespectacled man standing beside them, Qin Anyi knew that he, rather than being an asset, might become the biggest liability—a ticking time bomb in their plans. The thought was almost thrilling.

Weidong’s eyes lit up with excitement. "Anyi, that was brilliant! Next, I figure they’ll lock you up in the holding center, and Guo Qingyuan will spread rumors about you at school. You’ll have to put up with some injustice for now—give me a week, and I’ll set everything right! I’ll talk to your family, don’t worry. Also... the holding center is full of all kinds of people. Want me to pull some strings?"

"No need. They’re just ordinary folks—it’s nothing," Qin Anyi replied lightly. As far as he was concerned, his mission was already accomplished. Now it was up to Weidong to stir things up and seize the opportunity.

He wasn’t worried about what would happen with his family or at school once he was in custody. With Weidong handling things, there was nothing to fear. If the son of the city party secretary couldn’t manage that much, it would be utterly unbelievable.

"Alright then. Take care of yourself this week. I’ll try to hurry things along—if we don’t give Guo Qingyuan time to react, this might set off a real earthquake in the whole city of Changqing. Just wait for it!" Weidong clapped Qin Anyi on the shoulder, looking more confident than Qin Anyi had ever seen him.

Qin Anyi was a little surprised at this newfound confidence, but he only smiled and nodded. "Go do what you need to do. I have a few more questions for you, but I’ll wait until it’s all over."

"Deal. For now, let’s leave it at that. I’ll come get you in a week!"
