Chapter Thirty-One: Are You Even Worthy?

“Guo Qingyuan, it's best to be sensible and know when to advance or retreat.” Wang Yiran stood beside Qin Anyi with a blank expression, disdainfully curling her lips. “I can take Anyi to undergo the test. After all, none of you have witnessed his intellect firsthand. But now that you’ve seen it, there’s no need to indulge your endless nonsense. You’re tedious and frankly disgusting.”
That final sentence struck Guo Qingyuan’s heart heavily, crushing the last thread of reason within him. Ever since he could remember, not a single person had ever uttered a harsh word about him. He grew up surrounded by praise, and with his father’s smooth ascent in politics, sycophants flocked around him like stars in the sky. His mother doted on him excessively, and on the surface at least, Guo Qingyuan was always outstanding—whether in elementary school, middle school, or high school, he was always among the elite few. His academic excellence only fueled his parents’ indulgence; any wish he had was granted without hesitation.
But today, the girl he liked had called him disgusting in front of so many people! The emotional upheaval was a true blow—no one had ever treated him this way, never.
“Wang Yiran! What right do you have to call me disgusting? You’re the one wanting to use privilege to recommend someone for the team! Don’t think you can boss me around just because everyone knows I like you. Teachers, I stand by my decision! Qin Anyi’s grades are too poor—he’s not qualified to join the team. If you insist on letting Qin Anyi join, then I’ll withdraw!” Guo Qingyuan shouted furiously, his face contorted. At this moment, he not only hated Qin Anyi, but Wang Yiran as well. In his view, Wang Yiran was utterly ungrateful; he had shown her obvious affection, which should have been a blessing to her. Even though Wang Yiran had kept her distance for two years, Guo Qingyuan thought it was mere feminine reserve, understandable. But Wang Yiran should never have used his tolerance and understanding as an excuse to criticize him so freely!
Guo Qingyuan brooded vengefully, determined to make Wang Yiran pay for daring to treat him this way.
“Qingyuan, don’t be so impulsive. Yiran is thinking of the school’s best interests. If a hidden expert is found, our school’s chances will greatly increase. Besides, regardless of anything else, Anyi’s memory is extraordinary. Just for that alone, he can be called a genius,” Zhao Guoping tried to smooth things over, though he disliked Guo Qingyuan’s arrogant attitude. However, since Guo Qingyuan wasn’t his student and had a powerful father, Zhao Guoping refrained from saying more. Still, his words clearly favored Wang Yiran and Qin Anyi.
“Xiao Zhao, what are you saying? Yiran is thinking of the school, but isn’t Qingyuan as well? The truth is, Qin Anyi can’t convince the others—he’s never joined this competition, and his grades are average. If he’s chosen, others will surely be dissatisfied. Let’s postpone this for now and wait for the test results,” the female teacher spoke again, her tone sharp.
“If people reason with me, I’ll reason back. If they don’t, I have no qualms about being forceful. How is it unreasonable? Whether Qin Anyi has the ability was already clear from the memory test just now. What’s there to argue about? As I said, either Anyi comes with me, or we both leave,” Wang Yiran’s tone was resolute. The other teachers remained silent; after all, this matter didn’t concern them directly, and it looked like things would only escalate, so it was best to stay out of it.
“Wang Yiran! Must you oppose me?” Guo Qingyuan’s eyes blazed with fury, his body trembling uncontrollably.
“Oppose you?” Wang Yiran glanced at Guo Qingyuan with contempt. “Guo Qingyuan, your self-regard is astonishing. You think I’m opposing you? Are you even worthy?”
