Volume One, Chapter Ninety-Three: Young Master Chu
The visitor was standing right behind the back of his chair and now reached out one hand to press gently on Lester's shoulder.
"Oh, damn, Young Master Chu, you're trying to scare me to death," Lester said, taking off his black sunglasses. He turned and saw the newcomer's face, then clutched his chest with his left hand.
"Talking business?" the man with the surname Chu asked with a smile.
"Just a friend asking me to look into a high school student," Lester said, scratching his head a little sheepishly.
"A big-time information broker like you should be out investigating world changes and signs of catastrophe, not sitting here snooping on some school kid," Young Master Chu said with a faint, scornful smile. After letting go of Lester's shoulder, he waved him aside, signaling for him to make room.
Though still a bit dazed, Lester quickly realized that Chu probably wanted to use his computer and hurriedly stood up.
Young Master Chu sat in Lester's chair, adjusted the height, and began working. Lester, meanwhile, watched him with curious eyes.
A moment earlier, after browsing through the rather dismal academic record of the boy named Modi, Lester had suddenly felt Chu's hand press his shoulder from behind, and the look in his eyes had told him to end his conversation with Roddy at once.
Now Chu kept scrolling, and the next section of Modi's ability examination report popped up.
Without any concern for Lester, who was standing beside him and watching, Chu immediately began editing the various time data in Modi's ability assessment report.
"Whoa, what the hell is this..." Lester blurted out a curse after seeing Modi's breakthrough experience, then stared wide-eyed at the screen, speechless. Even the lollipop in his mouth was crushed to powder in his agitation.
Chu paid no mind to Lester's fussing and instead added many time points to Modi's file, rewriting the breakthrough experience and inserting it.
This was only a modification at the network level; later, that fellow Eleven would still need to contact the school. After all, if one was going to stage a performance, one had to do it properly.
Chu was also rather troubled at the moment. He had not expected that the boy Modi would break through so quickly, and the fabricated materials from before were already somewhat insufficient. To prevent Modi's current Surging Realm from seeming too abrupt, Chu had no choice but to move forward the time of Modi's awakening and each subsequent breakthrough.
"Hello? Hello? Eleven? Later you'll need to inform Tianshui High School as well. That guy Modi has broken through again—this time he's in the late Surging Realm... Fine, fine. If you've got time to complain, you'd be better off hurrying to clean up that mess for him..." After finishing the whole procedure, Chu hung up on Eleven, shut down the background systems, and let out a long breath.
Who knew what on earth that guy Modi had been doing during the lunar tide, to have his level shooting upward every few days.
After receiving Teacher Roddy's call, Blue City looked at Modi with far more warmth in his eyes. In his impression, Roddy very rarely cared this much about a student, let alone spending a great sum of money to investigate his background.
By now, Blue City had completely come to regard Modi as his "almost junior brother."
When the group arrived at the shooting range gymnasium, Modi looked toward the distant training dummy made of shimmering soft silver and drove his vital energy into a long blade, shaping it before hurling it straight out.
With a sharp crack, the vital-energy blade shattered on impact, and Modi was not surprised in the least. After all, a blade formed purely from condensed vital energy could not match metal in strength. If he used the short blade he had forged himself, he ought to be able to leave a clean mark on the dummy with ease.
Although it was famous for its memory-like properties and its ability to recover itself after being struck, the strength of flowing light soft silver was by no means low; it was already considered a fairly rare magical alloy.
The shattered vital-energy blade plunged into the magical-metal dummy, and Modi once again condensed a blade and cast it out.
Seeing that Modi could already materialize swords and blades with such ease, Blue City held this junior brother in even higher regard.
Metal-type abilities were never as adept at shaping forms as elemental abilities; they were usually better suited to using weapons to unleash their arts.
No proper weapon had been prepared here for Modi, so the destructive power of blades formed only from vital energy was indeed limited.
Blue City had just been about to remind Modi that the rule for this stage was simply to expel all the vital energy within his body when he noticed the boy stop shaping blades altogether.
Could it be that he had already exhausted his vital energy? Looking at Modi, who still seemed full of vigor, Blue City felt that was unlikely.
Then Modi extended both hands, pointed from a distance at the magical-metal dummy, and slowly closed his eyes.
