Chapter Ninety-Six: Massacre! (Eighth Update, continuing the bonus updates for the alliance leader)
“I’m here. You’re dead meat!”
Chen Feng’s voice, faint and ghostly, drifted into Luo Wenqiang’s ear, and the bone-chilling cold in it made him shiver violently. He could tell that Chen Feng sounded utterly calm, frighteningly calm—no anger, no fear, just stillness. It was the sort of calm one might have while stepping on an ant to death.
Luo Wenqiang had never once imagined Chen Feng would fight back. After all, Chen Feng had already completely given up resisting. He had been bound with handcuffs, his head covered, and two guns had been aimed at his head at all times. Luo Wenqiang could not, no matter how hard he tried, figure out how Chen Feng had escaped.
None of that mattered anymore. Chen Feng was here, and he had said that Luo Wenqiang was as good as dead.
At that thought, Luo Wenqiang snatched up the radio and shouted, “Everyone prepare at once. He’s about to storm in!”
The words had barely fallen when a thunderous crash exploded through the air. The tightly locked factory doors were instantly smashed open by a terrifying force, and both doors flew clear away. Everyone turned toward the entrance at the same time, only to find it empty.
Whoosh!
The next second, two dark objects were suddenly hurled inside. The mercenaries all froze. Many of them dropped flat at once. They were all men who had survived battle; seeing something thrown in like that, their first instinct was that they were grenades.
But in the next moment they came to themselves. What had been thrown in was not a grenade, but two magazines. Their rounded bottoms made them wobble like little roly-polies, swaying back and forth now, as if mocking their panic.
Many of the mercenaries let out a small breath of relief. But at that very moment—
Bang! Bang!
Two gunshots rang out.
At once, two mercenaries were struck through the head by bullets. Their bodies convulsed violently a few times, then collapsed helplessly to the floor.
Clack.
A figure suddenly appeared at the doorway. Then Chen Feng strode in, gun in hand, step by step. The mercenaries could not help but stare.
These were men who lived amid gunfire and bloodshed, who had fought on countless battlefields. They knew very well that on a battlefield, the first thing to protect was oneself. For someone like Chen Feng to stroll out so openly was simply suicide.
“Open fire!”
One mercenary roared. In truth, he need not have said it. The others had already trained their barrels on Chen Feng and squeezed the triggers with all their might.
Yet the moment they moved, Chen Feng’s body darted into motion as well, fast beyond belief.
Bang bang! Bang bang!
Bullets tore through the air with shrill whistles, but then came a sight that filled them with terror: one bullet after another missed completely and failed to touch Chen Feng at all. Every face went pale with a look as though they had seen a ghost.
They felt an uncanny sensation. This Chen Feng seemed almost able to sense whether their gun barrels were aimed at him.
That was one of Chen Feng’s unique instincts. So long as a barrel was pointed at him, at any part of his body, he could sense it. Even in the car just now, when his head had been covered, he had still been able to detect a gun aimed at his temple and react correctly in the split second available.
Huff!
Chen Feng moved again. His arms spread wide, and in an instant he fired two shots. Two bullets flashed through the void and blew the heads of two mercenaries apart on the spot. Then, with a slight shift of his body and a cross of his arms, the two mercenaries who had just brought their guns to bear on him suddenly felt a searing pain in their chests. Their hearts burst open at once, leaving two bowl-sized holes behind.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
Fear spread like wildfire through every mercenary’s heart. The only thing they could do was keep hammering their triggers, and that had almost become the sole thought in each of their minds.
But the instant they fired, Chen Feng moved like a ghost. No matter how they shot, he always slipped past the bullets at an impossible angle, while the twin guns in his hands became like specters harvesting souls, madly reaping one living life after another.
To Chen Feng, all of this was no different from child’s play. No fear, no guilt, not the slightest discomfort—there was not even the smallest ripple of emotion.
“How is this possible?” Luo Wenqiang, who remained on the second floor and had not joined the fight, stared in utter disbelief at the scene before him. The mercenaries under his command were not ordinary mercenaries; every one of them was a battle-hardened veteran. In Africa they had even fought regular armies, and within the country their fighting strength was among the very best.
Luo Wenqiang had always spoken of how much he valued Chen Feng, but in truth he had never taken him seriously. In his eyes, the mercenaries he had brought back would finish Chen Feng in no time at all.
Yet when this scene lay fully before Luo Wenqiang, he finally felt a fear that rose from the bottom of his soul.
This Chen Feng was nothing like the easy target he had imagined. This man was simply a killing machine.
Click. Click.
The gunfire abruptly ceased. Hollow silence suddenly spread through the little factory, and to the mercenaries there, that emptiness sounded like music from heaven. At last, this bastard had emptied his magazine.
The remaining mercenaries seized the opportunity at once, hurriedly aiming at Chen Feng. Yet Chen Feng’s body suddenly dipped low; he was already beside the roly-poly magazine. Crouching down, he let the magazine pop out and slammed the grip hard into it.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
Their joy did not last long. Once again, the gunfire that heralded death echoed in every ear. Two mercenaries’ chests burst open in sprays of blood, and their bodies crashed to the ground as blood spurted violently from the wounds.
Huff.
The mercenaries no longer dared show themselves. Courage had already fled from them. One and all, they could only cower behind cover. The whole factory was steeped in a thick stench of blood, and within it there remained only the faint sound of breathing. They did not even dare breathe loudly, only slowly.
Hmph.
A faint, contemptuous smile curved Chen Feng’s lips. He stood in place with both hands on his guns, yet his ears twitched slightly. The sounds of breathing around him instantly became clear in his hearing.
With the complete super-soldier serum enhancing him, Chen Feng’s perception of the outside world had become immensely sharper, and his five senses had reached an appallingly heightened level.
Even their carefully slowed breathing was caught by him. In truth, even if they held their breath, he could still hear their heartbeats.
One mercenary cautiously poked his head out to glance at Chen Feng. The instant he did so, Chen Feng spun around and fired without hesitation.
Bang.
A bullet screamed through the air and struck the mercenary squarely in the head.
The force of the shot blew the mercenary’s skull apart on the spot, splattering red and white matter all over the floor.
No one took the chance to fire. They all understood that to show themselves now was to die. They could not kill Chen Feng at all, while Chen Feng moved with the ease of a man strolling in a garden. After walking a few steps, he suddenly pointed his pistol, and a bullet whistled out. With a scream, another life was taken by his hand.
Bang! Bang!
With no more dense barrage of gunfire, the entire factory was filled instead with a single, monotonous rhythm. Every shot was followed by a scream, and every scream meant another comrade had died.
A suffocating pressure rose in every heart.
Beads of sweat rolled down each mercenary’s forehead. Terror raged wildly through their minds.
It was an indescribable feeling—oppression, fear.
The feeling of waiting for death.
To stand up was to die; to stay down was also to die. The only difference was whether death came sooner or later.
“I can’t take this anymore!”
Suddenly one mercenary screamed and went madly racing toward the outer edge of the factory. Yet the instant he rushed out, a bullet also screamed through the air, taking his life away in a single shot.
The mercenaries were nearly collapsing. Their nerves could no longer bear this waiting-for-death torment.
“Chen Feng, stop right now! If you don’t, your girlfriend is dead for sure!”
At that moment, a furious roar suddenly thundered through the factory. Then Luo Wenqiang emerged through a small door, holding Fang Yue in front of him.
Most of his body was hidden behind Fang Yue’s back as he pushed her, step by step, toward Chen Feng.
Chen Feng’s movements paused slightly. Luo Wenqiang, however, shouted, “Chen Feng, you’d better stay put and behave yourself. Otherwise, I can’t promise I won’t shake and blow your girlfriend’s brains out. And even if you kill me, I still have the ability to kill her. Do you believe that?”
As he spoke, Luo Wenqiang had already pressed the muzzle to the back of Fang Yue’s head.
“You’d better not do anything reckless.”
His plea hangs here, with the next part to follow.
